We, humans, tend to feel pain and pleasure physically, mentally, and emotionally. But what we feel physical is taken into consideration. The mental pain and emotions are usually not accounted but in reality, they reside physically in our bodies. These are the parts where the energy flows. The vortexes of these energies are what we commonly know as “chakra”, which translates literally to wheel or disk. Chakras are the wheels of energy that are spinning and rotating the life force throughout the body.
There are altogether 7 chakras in a human body, beginning from the base of the spine and moving to the top of the head. Each chakra plays a unique role in keeping the mind, soul, and body-focused and avoiding the negative imbalances. Even though they contribute individually, it is essential to have a proper balance of all 7 chakras. Today, in this article, we will be discussing the second chakra, the Sacral chakra.
What is Sacral Chakra?
The sacral chakra is the second chakra according to Hindu Tantrism. In Sanskrit, it is known as “svadhisthana”, which translates to “where your being is established”. This chakra lies in the lower abdomen right below the navel and extends up to the pelvic region. It is associated with pleasure, creativity, and emotional body. The second chakra acts as a source of empowering our feelings and enabling us to enjoy our lives. Some chakras focus on survival whereas some on experiencing life and making the best out of it. But together, the chakras aim in making our life better and filled with positivity, self-love, and confidence.
The sacral chakra acts as the driving force to help you connect and acknowledge your emotions, brainstorm better, improve creativity, refine your relationships, and activate your sexuality. Creativity does not necessarily have to be just art; it can be anything from writing your poem, or a story or creating your website. Creativity is an idea that is unique and innovative, and this is an outcome of a balanced sacral chakra. You can achieve the appropriate level of passion, connection, and creativity by balancing the sacral chakra.
Characteristics of Sacral Chakra
Some characteristics that we see in a person with a balanced Sacral chakra are as mentioned below:
- Acknowledgment of their emotions
- Open to challenges and experiences
- Initiation for new activities
- Positive outlook towards sexuality and pleasure

What if My Sacral Chakra is Unbalanced?
The dismissive thoughts, the unaddressed emotions, the ignored opinions, the disrespect for sexuality and pleasure are some of the factors that contribute to an imbalanced or an inactive Sacral chakra. You will be fearing constantly about expressing your emotions and sharing your ideas. Your creativity gets limited, hindering you from exploring the possibilities. It is safe to say that you need to work on balancing your second chakra if your traits include:
- Demeaning yourself
- Repressing your emotions
- Dismissing your opinions
- Lowering of your creativity
- Obsessed sexually or lacking sexual desires
- Being ruled by your emotions or overreactions
- Uncertainty in relationships
- Inability to accept changes
- Abusive or unhealthy relationships
- Lack of interest in exploring and enjoying life
- Dependency on another individual or object
- Lack of authenticity and confidence
These are some of the characteristics shown by a person having an imbalanced chakra. These can lead to severe consequences and long-term effects psychologically and emotionally. Due to the location of this chakra, you can see the effects of physical health as well, . It can cause irregular menstrual cycle, urinary or bladder infections, muscle tension, abdominal cramps, genital or sexual problems, or arthritis. Despite all the possible impacts, it is curable. That is, consistent healing efforts can gain a balance in Sacral chakra.
How to Balance and Energize the Sacral Chakra?
I believe that it is very essential to have a balanced Sacral chakra for a healthy and prosperous life. There is more than one way to balance or activate your Sacral chakra. This can vary from individual to individual. Whether the chakra is blocked, unclear, inactive, or unbalanced, the method of healing is usually similar. You can use healing music like Binaural beats or Solfeggio frequency, meditate, or aromatherapy to revive the chakra. So the goal is to awaken each body cell and whoop it up!

Many of you have probably heard about the hip-opening yoga postures. It is considered as the seat of sexuality and individuality on a psycho-spiritual level. We tend to tighten the hips, lower back, and emotional muscles with increasing tension. You can release the tension or stress through this posture. Some specific yoga positions to open and balance your Sacral chakra include open-angle pose (Upavistha Konasana), frog pose (Bhekasana), pigeon pose (Kapotasana) and goddess pose (Utkata Konasana).
People often mistake meditation and yoga as the same activity. But in reality, the technique of focusing on a particular thought, object, or activity is meditation. Whereas, chakra meditation focuses on a specific body area. Similarly, meditating for balancing Sacral chakra focuses on the abdomen region of the body.
For beginners, I’d recommend using healing music like Binaural beats during meditation. It helps in focusing and easing your mind. You can start by visualizing an orange lotus or orange crescent moon in your pelvis area. This is a good way to reconnect your body and mind. Moreover, regular meditation can help your mind to clear from negativity and restore your chakra.
The therapy that uses essential oils and natural plant extracts to promote well-being is known as aromatherapy. It is a simple therapy, but a proven method in activating and balancing the second chakra. The essential oils like Sandalwood and Ylang-Ylang promote joy, emotional balance, creativity, restore sensuality, and boost the healing process. You can also use cleansing aromas like chamomile, spearmint, rose, or eucalyptus to open the chakra. Different essential oils have different purposes. For example, sandalwood warms the emotions, clary sage brings the feeling of worthiness, and jasmine promotes love, joy, and harmony.
Citrine, carnelian, orange calcite, amber jewelry, or other orange stones are the Sacral chakra healing stones. These stones influence Svadhisthana. You can use them while meditating or carry them around with you to allow their energetic properties to help you activate your chakra. Carnelian has a significant effect on your body. It restores vitality, passion, and has cleansing effects. Some experts even suggest using Moonstone (Sacral chakra is associated with moon and water).
Connect With Water
The element of our Sacral chakra is water. Hence, it’s a high influence on this chakra. I would suggest you go out and spend more time around the water. You can even relax in or around open water sources like flowing streams, lakes, rivers, or even ocean. You can go for a swim, or just take a shower to help the energy flow. It tends to relax your muscles and helps your emotions to flow. These help in restoring and balancing your Sacral chakra.
Your physical and mental well-being is always affected by your diet. Being said so, your chakra can be restored with a change in your diet. You can consume foods like coconuts, seeds, melons, and oranges as healing foods. Some people recommend cinnamon too. As always, drinking water is also beneficial.
Explore Your Creativity
Since this chakra is all about polishing and showcasing your creativity, the initial phase involves exploring your creativity. You need to work on your old and new hobbies, and let your creativity flow. This helps in restoring your Sacral chakra. Do more of what makes you happy and gives you a sense of pleasure. Your creativity can include anything from writing to art to dancing to cooking to building a new project for your college. It doesn’t have to be anything big as long as it’s your own.
Accept and Overcome
The path to happiness lies in accepting your feelings, negative or positive, and overcoming them. The past should never hold you back from moving on and being happy in life. You might be feeling guilty over something that happened previously, or upset or hurt or afraid due to some traumatizing events. But holding on to these emotions will only cause more trouble in your present and upcoming days. So, the key is to accept all the feelings, acknowledging them, feeling them and then, overcoming them. This not only frees you from mental and emotional stress but also helps you in restoring your Sacral chakra.
Like I mentioned earlier about accepting and overcoming, you also need to learn to let go. Let go of emotions, relationships, memories, habits- anything that is unhealthy for you. You ought to realize that you don’t owe anything to anyone, be it in a relationship or the memories. However, you do owe yourself a happy and positive life. So, let go of the baggage that you don’t need to create. Instead, create space and energy for yourself to try out new things.
Balance Your Other Chakras
Just balancing one chakra is not sufficient. You need to have overall balance in all of your chakras for distinct improvement. So, focus on restoring your other chakras too.
As important as it is to accept all your feelings, it is equally important to accept yourself. You need to stop comparing yourself with others and have to focus on improving yourself. Rather than demeaning yourself, work on growing yourself and do things that make you happy. Do more of the things that relax your mind and boost your confidence. It is you who has the power to either improve yourself or degrade yourself. Never look down on yourself. I,
- “am sufficient.”
- “deserve to experience a pleasure.”
- “am confident.”
- “am strong and creative.”
- “love myself for the person I am.”
- “am comfortable in my skin.”
- “am passionate and bold.”
- “can embrace change.”
- “can radiate positivity.”
- “am free to explore my body.”
- “am ready to take risks and face challenges, and experience new things.”
These are some of the positive affirmations that many of the people have been using during the healing process of Sacral chakra. These phrases shouldn’t be your limitations; you can use any phrase that motivates you. Make sure you feel whatever you speak.
Binaural Beats for Sacral chakra
When you hear a sound, but the frequency of sound in your left ear is different than the frequency of sound in your right ear (of the same sound), then the brain is tricked into hearing a third frequency, which is the difference of the two sounds, known as Binaural beat.
The Sacral chakra has its frequency of vibration. It has the second-lowest frequency among our 7 chakras. The carrier frequency is 288 Hz, and the pulse is 9 Hz. So, the binaural beat of 9 Hz corresponds with this chakra and helps in restoring, balancing, or activating the chakra.
How Do Binaural Beat Help to Balance Sacral Chakra?
The Binaural beat of 9 Hz has been proven pretty effective to relax your mind, enhance creativity, and improve sensuality. Moreover, it can be used during yoga and meditation for better concentration. All these activities are directly responsible for balancing your Svadhisthana.
Binaural beats are a piece of reliable healing music used globally for a better lifestyle or mental health. Usually, they are used to aid in sleeping or calming your mind. Similarly, in the case of the Sacral chakra, it can be used to free your mind from negative thoughts, improve your creative thinking, and allow yourself to experience pleasure and sensuality. Likewise, the alpha state associates with this frequency; the time when the brain is moving towards relaxation and calmness. So the 9 Hz aligns with this state, and hence the above-discussed results.
